The standard Kathmandu to Lhasa overland journey takes 11 days total, including 3 full days exploring Lhasa and a final departure day. Extended tours run 15-17 days with additional stops like Everest Base Camp. The actual driving time is about 35-40 hours spread across multiple days for proper acclimatization. Border crossing typically takes 2-4 hours on Day 2.
The gradual ascent of overland tours reduces altitude sickness risk compared to flying directly to Lhasa. You'll climb from 1,400m (Kathmandu) to 4,300m (Tingri) over 3 days. Most travelers experience mild symptoms (headache, fatigue) that resolve with rest. We include acclimatization days and carry emergency oxygen.
April-May and September-November offer ideal conditions with clear skies and moderate temperatures. October is particularly spectacular for mountain views. Avoid December-March (extreme cold) and July-August (monsoon) unless you're prepared for weather challenges. The Gyirong border occasionally closes in winter.
Yes, we offer an optional detour to Everest North Base Camp (5,200m) for an additional $150-200. This adds one day to your itinerary (making it 12 days total). The visit includes Rongbuk Monastery, the world's highest monastery. Weather permitting, you'll have stunning Everest views. This is typically done on Day 5 as a detour from Tingri.
Border closures are rare but possible due to weather or political situations. If closure occurs before departure, we offer full refunds or date changes. If during the tour, we arrange alternative routing (possibly via flight) at no extra cost. Our 24/7 support team manages such situations professionally.
The overland journey offers gradual acclimatization, reducing altitude sickness risk by 70%. You'll witness the dramatic landscape transformation from subtropical Nepal to the Tibetan plateau. The journey itself becomes an adventure with photo opportunities, cultural encounters, and a sense of accomplishment that flying cannot match.
