FAQs about travel in himalayanhero.com

How to get Tibet travel permit in Kathmandu?

We handle the entire Tibet permit process in Kathmandu. Submit your passport copy and Chinese visa 20-30 days before travel. Our partner agency processes the Tibet Travel Permit (8-15 days), and you'll collect it 1-2 days before departure. Individual applications aren't possible - you must book through a registered tour operator.

What is the cost of Nepal to Tibet overland tour?

Costs range from $1,299-3,999 per person depending on tour type. Standard group tours start at $1,299, private tours from $2,299, and luxury experiences from $3,999. This includes permits, accommodation, guide, transport, and some meals. Add $85-185 for Chinese visa and $100-200 for personal expenses.

Is solo travel allowed via Gyirong border?

No, solo travel to Tibet isn't permitted for international tourists. Chinese regulations require joining an organized tour with a minimum of 2 participants. You can book a private tour alone but will pay for 2 people. We often help solo travelers connect with others for group tours.

What documents are needed for Tibet travel from Nepal?

Required documents include: valid passport (6+ months validity), Chinese visa (tourist L or business F), passport-size photos (4), completed permit application form, travel insurance proof, and confirmed tour booking. Journalists, diplomats, and certain nationalities may need additional clearances.

How long does the overland journey take?

The standard Kathmandu to Lhasa overland journey takes 11 days total, including 3 full days exploring Lhasa and a final departure day. Extended tours run 15-17 days with additional stops like Everest Base Camp. The actual driving time is about 35-40 hours spread across multiple days for proper acclimatization. Border crossing typically takes 2-4 hours on Day 2.

Is altitude sickness a concern on this route?

The gradual ascent of overland tours reduces altitude sickness risk compared to flying directly to Lhasa. You'll climb from 1,400m (Kathmandu) to 4,300m (Tingri) over 3 days. Most travelers experience mild symptoms (headache, fatigue) that resolve with rest. We include acclimatization days and carry emergency oxygen.

What's the best time of year for this tour?

April-May and September-November offer ideal conditions with clear skies and moderate temperatures. October is particularly spectacular for mountain views. Avoid December-March (extreme cold) and July-August (monsoon) unless you're prepared for weather challenges. The Gyirong border occasionally closes in winter.

Can we visit Everest Base Camp (North) on this tour?

Yes, we offer an optional detour to Everest North Base Camp (5,200m) for an additional $150-200. This adds one day to your itinerary (making it 12 days total). The visit includes Rongbuk Monastery, the world's highest monastery. Weather permitting, you'll have stunning Everest views. This is typically done on Day 5 as a detour from Tingri.

What happens if the border closes unexpectedly?

Border closures are rare but possible due to weather or political situations. If closure occurs before departure, we offer full refunds or date changes. If during the tour, we arrange alternative routing (possibly via flight) at no extra cost. Our 24/7 support team manages such situations professionally.

How different is this from flying to Lhasa?

The overland journey offers gradual acclimatization, reducing altitude sickness risk by 70%. You'll witness the dramatic landscape transformation from subtropical Nepal to the Tibetan plateau. The journey itself becomes an adventure with photo opportunities, cultural encounters, and a sense of accomplishment that flying cannot match.
