Gokyo Chola Pass Trek EBC – 16 Days Complete Package Guide

Experience three iconic Himalayan destinations in one extraordinary journey: Everest Base Camp, the dramatic Chola Pass crossing, and the pristine turquoise Gokyo Lakes — all with expert guides and comprehensive support.

Gokyo Chola Pass Trek EBC – Overview

The Gokyo Chola Pass Trek combines three bucket-list Himalayan experiences into a single 16-day adventure. You'll stand at Everest Base Camp, cross the challenging Chola Pass at 5,421 meters, and witness the sacred turquoise Gokyo Lakes — all while trekking through the heart of Sherpa country.

This route is often called the "Khumbu Circuit Trek" because it creates a comprehensive loop through the Everest region's most spectacular landscapes. Unlike the standard Everest Base Camp trek that retraces the same path, this journey offers continuous new scenery.

For even more adventure, the Everest 3 Pass Trek adds Renjo La and Kongma La passes to create the ultimate Khumbu challenge.

What Makes This Trek Exceptional:

  • Three major destinations combined: EBC, Chola Pass, and Gokyo Lakes
  • Views of four 8,000-meter peaks from Gokyo Ri summit
  • Cross the legendary Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal's longest glacier
  • Experience authentic Sherpa villages throughout the Khumbu Valley
  • Comprehensive acclimatization strategy built into the itinerary

The Everest Base Camp Chola Pass Gokyo Trek delivers more altitude highlights than any other single route in the region. You'll summit both Kala Patthar (5,550m) for sunrise over Everest and Gokyo Ri (5,463m) for panoramic views of the entire Khumbu basin.

This 16-day Gokyo Chola Pass trek itinerary follows a clockwise direction — reaching Everest Base Camp first, then crossing Chola Pass to descend via Gokyo Lakes. This approach maximizes acclimatization before the technical pass crossing.

Why Combine Gokyo Lakes, Chola Pass & Everest Base Camp

Choosing between Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes is a common dilemma for trekkers. This combined route eliminates that difficult choice entirely — you experience both legendary destinations plus the adventure of crossing a high Himalayan pass.

The Three-in-One Trek Advantage

Most trekkers visit either EBC or Gokyo Lakes separately, missing the complete Khumbu experience. The Gokyo Chola Pass EBC trek connects these destinations through the dramatic Cho La Pass crossing, creating Nepal's most rewarding high-altitude circuit.

Key Benefits of the Combined Route:

  • No backtracking — continuous forward progression
  • Two distinct summit viewpoints (Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri)
  • Experience both the Khumbu Glacier and Ngozumpa Glacier
  • Less crowded trails on the Gokyo side
  • Deeper immersion in Sherpa culture across multiple valleys

Gokyo vs Standard EBC: Why This Route Wins

The standard Everest Base Camp trek follows an out-and-back route, meaning you see the same scenery twice. The Gokyo Chola Pass Everest Base Camp trek solves this limitation by creating a loop that constantly reveals new landscapes.

Gokyo Chola Pass VS EBC

Factor Standard EBC Trek Gokyo Chola Pass EBC Trek
Route Type Out-and-back Circuit (loop)
Major Viewpoints 1 (Kala Patthar) 2 (Kala Patthar + Gokyo Ri)
Glaciers Crossed Khumbu only Khumbu + Ngozumpa
Trail Variety Moderate High
Crowd Levels High throughout Lower on Gokyo side

From Gokyo Ri, you'll see four 8,000-meter peaks simultaneously — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. No other accessible viewpoint in Nepal offers this extraordinary panorama.

The sacred Gokyo Lakes system includes six turquoise glacial lakes fed by the Ngozumpa Glacier. The third lake (Dudh Pokhari) sits directly below Gokyo Ri and creates one of the Himalaya's most photographed scenes.

Gokyo Chola Pass Trek Difficulty & Physical Preparation

The Gokyo Chola Pass trek difficulty is rated strenuous — harder than the standard EBC trek due to the technical Chola Pass crossing and two summit viewpoints.

Difficulty Assessment by Section

Days 1-6: Moderate Standard Himalayan trekking on well-maintained trails. Daily elevation gains of 400-700 meters. 5-6 hours walking per day.

Days 7-8: Strenuous High altitude above 4,900m. Thin air significantly increases effort. Rocky glacial terrain approaching EBC.

Days 9-10: Very Strenuous Kala Patthar pre-dawn summit followed by Chola Pass crossing. The pass requires 8-10 hours of hiking including technical terrain.

Days 11-14: Moderate-Easy Gokyo Ri summit followed by sustained descent. Trail conditions improve as altitude decreases.

If this is your first major trek, consider the Gokyo Lake trek without Chola Pass as preparation for this route in a future season.

Our 8-week EBC training plan provides a detailed fitness program applicable to the Gokyo Chola Pass trek.

Physical Fitness Requirements

The Gokyo Chola Pass trek requires serious physical preparation. The combination of altitude, duration, and technical terrain demands genuine fitness.

Minimum Fitness Benchmarks:

  • Ability to trek 6-8 hours at altitude with a daypack
  • Comfortable hiking uphill for extended periods
  • Previous multi-day trekking experience strongly recommended
  • Core strength for uneven terrain and scrambling
  • Mental stamina for pre-dawn summit pushes

Recommended Pre-Trek Training (3-4 months):

  • Cardiovascular training: Running, cycling, stair climbing (4-5x weekly)
  • Hiking with pack: Weekend hikes with 8-12kg load, building distance
  • Strength training: Legs, core, back (2-3x weekly)
  • Altitude exposure: If possible, train at elevation
  • Practice walks: 6-8 hour hikes to simulate trek days

Can Beginners Do Gokyo Chola Pass Trek?

This trek is not recommended for complete beginners. Prior high-altitude trekking experience significantly improves both safety and enjoyment.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Previous Himalayan or high-altitude trekking
  • Strong fitness base
  • Experience with multi-day hikes
  • Mental preparation for challenging conditions
  • Realistic expectations about difficulty

If this is your first major trek, consider the standard EBC trek or Gokyo Lakes trek (without Chola Pass) as preparation for this route in a future season.

Altitude & Acclimatization Strategy

Altitude management is critical for Gokyo Chola Pass trek success. With maximum altitude reaching 5,550m at Kala Patthar and the demanding Chola Pass crossing at 5,421m, proper acclimatization prevents altitude sickness and ensures safe completion.

Acclimatization Days Explained

Day 4: Namche Bazaar First mandatory rest day. Body adapts to the 3,400m altitude threshold where symptoms commonly begin. Optional hike to Everest View Hotel (3,880m) provides altitude exposure while sleeping lower.

Natural Acclimatization via Itinerary Unlike abbreviated treks, this 16-day itinerary builds altitude gradually. By the time you reach Chola Pass, you've had 8 days of progressive altitude exposure.

Altitude Sickness Prevention

Symptoms to Monitor:

  • Headache (most common early symptom)
  • Nausea and loss of appetite
  • Fatigue beyond normal tiredness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Disturbed sleep patterns

Severe Symptoms (Immediate Descent Required):

  • Persistent severe headache unrelieved by medication
  • Vomiting
  • Ataxia (loss of coordination)
  • Confusion or altered mental state
  • Breathlessness at rest
  • Persistent cough (possible HAPE)

Prevention Best Practices:

  • Hydrate aggressively: 4-5 liters daily
  • Avoid alcohol entirely above 3,500m
  • Eat regularly even without appetite
  • Sleep is healing — prioritize rest
  • Report symptoms immediately to guide
  • Diamox available if recommended by doctor

Your guide carries a pulse oximeter for regular oxygen saturation checks. Readings below 80% at rest require immediate assessment and potential descent.

Best Time for Gokyo Chola Pass Trek

Timing significantly impacts Gokyo Chola Pass trek conditions, particularly for the Chola Pass crossing. Two primary seasons offer optimal conditions.

Autumn Season (September-November)

Peak Months: October and November

Autumn is considered the premier Gokyo Chola Pass trek season. Post-monsoon clarity creates extraordinary visibility, and stable weather patterns reduce Chola Pass risks.

Autumn Advantages:

  • Clearest mountain views of the year
  • Stable weather patterns
  • Moderate temperatures (cold but not extreme)
  • Festival season (Dashain, Tihar)
  • Gokyo Lakes display brilliant turquoise color

Autumn Considerations:

  • Peak tourist season — busier teahouses
  • Higher flight demand to Lukla
  • Book permits and flights well in advance

Spring Season (March-May)

Peak Months: April and May

Spring offers warming temperatures and blooming rhododendrons on lower trails. Longer daylight hours provide more margin for the Chola Pass crossing.

Spring Advantages:

  • Warming temperatures
  • Rhododendron blooms (lower elevations)
  • Longer daylight hours
  • Good visibility (slightly less than autumn)
  • Moderate trail traffic

Spring Considerations:

Season Comparison

Factor Autumn (Sep-Nov) Spring (Mar-May)
Visibility Excellent Very Good
Temperature Cold Cool to Moderate
Trail Traffic High Moderate-High
Chola Pass Snow Usually minimal Variable
Gokyo Lakes Color Best turquoise Good

Seasons to Avoid

Monsoon (June-August): Heavy precipitation, cloud cover, leeches on lower trails, dangerous Chola Pass conditions. Not recommended.

Winter (December-February): Extreme cold, heavy snow possible on Chola Pass, some teahouses closed, shorter days. Possible for experienced trekkers but significantly more challenging.

Selecting the right operator for your Gokyo Chola Pass trek directly impacts safety, experience quality, and overall success. Himalayanhero Adventures offers distinct advantages as a Nepal-based direct operator.

Our Approach

Local Expertise: We're based in Nepal, not a booking portal in another country. Our guides, office team, and owners live in the Himalayan communities you'll visit. This translates to genuine local knowledge, not secondhand information.

Safety-First Philosophy: Chola Pass conditions can change rapidly. We maintain conservative decision-making, never pressuring clients to cross in marginal conditions. Alternative routes exist, and we'll use them if necessary.

  • Trek briefing and gear verification
  • Permit document collection
  • Kathmandu sightseeing time (optional)

Day 2: Fly to Lukla (2,830m) – Trek to Phakding (2,780m)

The 35-minute mountain flight to Lukla is an adventure itself. Tenzing-Hillary Airport sits on a cliff edge with one of the world's most dramatic runways.

After landing, meet your full trekking team including Sherpa guides and porters. The gentle 3-hour trek to Phakding follows the Dudh Koshi River through pine forests and past traditional Sherpa homesteads.

Day 2 Details:

  • Flight duration: 35 minutes
  • Trek duration: 3-4 hours
  • Elevation change: Slight descent
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Phakding
  • Trail condition: Well-maintained, easy

Day 3: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,441m)

Today's trek involves significant elevation gain as you ascend to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital of the Khumbu region. The trail crosses the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge and enters Sagarmatha National Park.

Your first glimpse of Everest appears during the steep final climb to Namche. The town itself is a fascinating hub with bakeries, gear shops, and internet cafés carved into the hillside.

Day 3 Details:

  • Trek duration: 5-6 hours
  • Elevation gain: +661m
  • Key landmarks: Sagarmatha National Park entrance, Hillary Bridge
  • Permit check: National Park entry verified
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Namche Bazaar

Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Namche (3,441m)

Critical rest day for altitude adaptation. Proper acclimatization at Namche significantly reduces altitude sickness risk during the demanding days ahead, particularly for the Chola Pass crossing.

Recommended Acclimatization Activities:

  • Morning hike to Everest View Hotel (3,880m)
  • Visit Sherpa Culture Museum
  • Explore Namche's markets and bakeries
  • Optional hike to Khumjung village (Hillary School)
  • Rest and hydration in afternoon

This "climb high, sleep low" strategy prepares your body for the Gokyo Chola Pass trek's higher altitudes. Don't skip this day regardless of how well you feel.

Day 5: Trek to Tengboche (3,851m)

The trail undulates through rhododendron forests with expanding mountain views. Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region, provides a spiritual highlight with Ama Dablam towering behind.

Afternoon prayers at the monastery are open to respectful visitors. The setting sun illuminating Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam from Tengboche creates unforgettable photographs.

Day 5 Details:

  • Trek duration: 5-6 hours
  • Elevation change: +410m (undulating)
  • Cultural highlight: Tengboche Monastery
  • Views: Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse

Dingboche sits in a wide valley surrounded by stone-walled potato fields. Views of Island Peak, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse's imposing south face dominate the skyline.

Day 6 Details:

  • Trek duration: 5-6 hours
  • Elevation gain: +498m
  • Terrain transition: Forest to high desert
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Dingboche
  • Note: Slower pace recommended above 4,000m

Day 7: Trek to Lobuche (4,910m)

The trail passes the Dughla memorial for fallen climbers before ascending to Lobuche. This emotionally powerful section commemorates those who lost their lives on Everest and surrounding peaks.

Lobuche offers basic but warm teahouse accommodation. The evening views of Nuptse's massive rock wall are spectacular as the sun sets.

Day 7 Details:

  • Trek duration: 4-5 hours
  • Elevation gain: +561m
  • Memorial site: Dughla Pass (4,830m)
  • Terrain: Rocky moraine, glacial valley
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Lobuche
  • Temperature: Expect below freezing at night

Day 8: Gorakshep – Everest Base Camp (5,365m) – Overnight

The first major objective of your Gokyo Chola Pass EBC trek. Trek to Gorakshep, leave bags, and continue to Everest Base Camp across the Khumbu Glacier's rocky debris.

Standing at EBC beside expedition tents with the Khumbu Icefall towering above is a profound experience. The glacier creaks and groans constantly — a reminder of the living ice beneath your feet.

Day 8 Details:

  • Trek duration: 6-7 hours total
  • Maximum altitude: 5,365m (EBC)
  • Terrain: Glacial moraine, rocky
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Gorakshep
  • Highlight: Khumbu Icefall views
  • Achievement: Everest Base Camp reached

Day 9: Kala Patthar (5,550m) – Trek to Dzonglha (4,830m)

Pre-dawn start for Kala Patthar — the trek's highest point and finest Everest viewpoint. Watch sunrise illuminate Everest's summit pyramid while the Khumbu Glacier glows gold below.

After descending to Gorakshep for breakfast, trek toward Dzonglha via Lobuche. Dzonglha is the staging point for tomorrow's Chola Pass crossing.

Day 9 Details:

  • Wake time: 4:00-4:30 AM
  • Kala Patthar summit: ~6:00 AM sunrise
  • Maximum altitude: 5,550m
  • Trek to Dzonglha: 4-5 hours from Gorakshep
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Dzonglha
  • Critical: Early sleep before Chola Pass

Day 10: Cross Chola Pass (5,421m) – Gokyo Lakes (4,750m)

The defining day of the Gokyo Chola Pass trek. Crossing Cho La Pass (5,421m) requires an early start, proper gear, and favorable weather. Your experienced Sherpa guide leads the way across this challenging mountain pass.

Chola Pass Crossing Sequence:

  1. Dzonglha to Pass Base (2-3 hours): Gradual climb through rocky terrain
  2. Steep Ascent (1.5-2 hours): Rocky scramble, possible snow/ice, fixed ropes in sections
  3. Chola Pass Summit (5,421m): Brief rest, photography, assessment
  4. Descent to Thangnak (2-3 hours): Steep initial descent, then moraine walking
  5. Thangnak to Gokyo (1.5 hours): Gentle trail along Ngozumpa Glacier

The Chola Pass altitude of 5,421 meters and technical terrain make this the trek's most demanding day. Total hiking time is 8-10 hours depending on conditions.

Chola Pass Requirements:

  • Crampons or microspikes (provided if needed)
  • Trekking poles (essential)
  • Headlamp for pre-dawn start
  • Wind/waterproof outer layers
  • Previous good acclimatization

Arriving at Gokyo Lakes in the afternoon reveals the stunning turquoise waters of Dudh Pokhari. The exhaustion of the pass crossing gives way to elation at this magnificent destination.

Day 11: Gokyo Ri Hike (5,463m)

The second summit viewpoint of your trek. Gokyo Ri offers what many consider the Himalaya's finest panorama — four 8,000-meter peaks visible simultaneously (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu).

Pre-dawn start ensures you reach the summit for sunrise. The turquoise Gokyo Lakes far below and the white expanse of Ngozumpa Glacier stretching northward complete an unforgettable scene.

Day 11 Details:

  • Wake time: 4:30 AM
  • Summit time: 2-3 hours up
  • Gokyo Ri altitude: 5,463m
  • Descent: 1.5-2 hours
  • Afternoon: Rest, explore Gokyo village
  • Optional: Hike to fourth or fifth lake

The Ngozumpa Glacier visible from Gokyo Ri is Nepal's longest glacier at 36 kilometers. Climate change is causing significant retreat, making this view increasingly important to witness firsthand.

Day 12: Trek to Dhole (4,200m)

Begin the descent from Gokyo along the less-traveled western Khumbu valley. The trail follows the glacial moraine before dropping into Machhermo, known locally for its alleged yeti sighting in 1974.

Continue to Dhole through beautiful rhododendron forests. The quieter trails on this side of the valley offer a peaceful contrast to the busier EBC route.

Day 12 Details:

  • Trek duration: 5-6 hours
  • Elevation loss: -550m
  • Villages passed: Machhermo, Na
  • Trail condition: Rocky descents, then forest
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Dhole
  • Cultural note: Yeti legend at Machhermo

Day 13: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,441m)

Continue descending through Phortse Tenga and climb briefly to rejoin the main trail. The route passes through beautiful forest with glimpses of Ama Dablam and Everest through the trees.

Return to Namche for celebration — you've successfully completed the Gokyo Chola Pass EBC circuit. Evening dinner with your team marks this achievement.

Day 13 Details:

  • Trek duration: 6-7 hours
  • Elevation change: -759m net
  • Trail junction: Rejoin EBC trail above Namche
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Namche Bazaar
  • Evening: Celebration dinner with team

Day 14: Trek to Lukla (2,840m)

Final trekking day descends through familiar territory. The trail drops steadily along the Dudh Koshi, crossing suspension bridges and passing through Sherpa villages you've come to recognize.

Arrive in Lukla by early afternoon. Final evening with your trekking team, farewell dinner, and early rest before morning flight.

Day 14 Details:

  • Trek duration: 6-7 hours
  • Elevation loss: -601m
  • Terrain: Well-maintained trail, river valley
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Lukla
  • Evening: Farewell dinner, pack for flight

Day 15: Fly to Kathmandu (1,350m)

Early morning flight returns you to Kathmandu. Weather permitting, this scenic flight offers final Himalayan views before landing at Tribhuvan Airport.

Transfer to your hotel with the remainder of the day free. Consider visiting Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, or simply rest and reflect on your achievement.

Day 15 Details:

  • Flight: Lukla to Kathmandu (35 minutes)
  • Weather contingency: Built into Day 16
  • Hotel transfer: Included
  • Afternoon: Free time in Kathmandu
  • Evening: Optional celebration dinner

Day 16: Final Departure

""I was terrified about Cho La Pass, but our guide Pemba made all the difference. The scramble was intense but manageable with proper guidance. What really got me was standing beside Gokyo Lake at sunrise—those turquoise waters reflecting Cho Oyu just broke me open. The Sherpa family in Machhermo taught me to make momos. We laughed until our stomachs hurt. That connection felt more valuable than any summit photo.""

""At 67, this 16-day pace was perfect. The rhododendrons in April were spectacular. I spent hours with an elderly Sherpa man sharing stories about early Everest expeditions. Cho La Pass was my biggest worry, but the slow build-up meant I felt surprisingly strong. Sunrise from Kala Patthar proved adventure doesn't have an expiration date.""

""Having done several treks in the Indian Himalayas, the Everest Base Camp Cho La Pass Gokyo Trek still managed to blow my mind with its sheer scale and beauty. The gokyo cho la pass trek from Kathmandu logistics were seamlessly handled, and the 16-day itinerary was perfectly paced for acclimatization. Crossing Chola Pass height at 5,420m was a personal triumph, and the views of Ngozumpa Glacier from Gokyo Ri were worth every challenging step - highly recommend this over the crowded standard EBC route!""
